Lot Description:Chinese Imperial Twelve Symbol Kesi Dragon Semi Formal robe (Jifu)
decorated to each side with five claw dragons, with flowers, scrolling clouds and the twelve symbols, above five multicoloured breaking waves (lishui) on a gold yellow ground, 123cm x 193cm -
Notes:Reference: The ornamentation of formal and semi formal court robes included the dragon motif together with decoraive representation of the Chinese conception of the cosmos. The dragon symbolised the emperor, known as the son of Heaven, and permission to wear the robe was given to him. Probably as earkly as the Zhou dynastys, the twelve Chinese symbols of soverignty appear on the sacrifical rbes of the Son of Heaven. In 1759 the twelve symbols were reserved exclusively for the robes of the son of heaven. "Chinese Dress in the Qing Dynasty", Powerhouse Mueum, Sydney.
