Notes:RELATED WORK: Commerce, cast concreter with aggregate, 314 cm high, Elgee Park Sculpture Park, Victoria, acquired 1960 Known for his public monuments, Stanley Hammond is recognised as one of Australia’s most versatile sculptors. Adopting a range of styles from realism to abstraction, Hammond specialised in large public sculptures and produced an extensive body of work including the bronze John Batman, on Collins Street, Melbourne, the Art Deco style panels in the foyer of the Australian Broadcasting Commission building, Melbourne and the WWI Memorial at Mont St. Quentin, in France. Hammond’s versatility is particularly evident within his Maquette for Commerce. First seen in a competition held at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne in 1960, the work won him a commission for the newly opened Chadstone Shopping Centre. With a nod to cubism, the work is a romantic depiction of commerce where ‘…a seller holds a globe symbolising world trade, to a buyer, with a manufacturer in the background.’ The final, commissioned, work, having stood for many years in the Garden Plaza at Chadstone, now sits gracefully within the sculpture garden at Elgee Park Winery, Victoria. Amongst many awards, Hammond received the MBE for his service to the arts and was given a medal of honour from the Victorian Artists Society. His work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, and the Australian War Memorial, Canberra Eliza Tiernan 1..Ken Scarlett, Elgee Park: sculpture in the landscape, Melbourne, Macmillan Art Publishing, 2004, p . 116- 117
