• Notes:
  Fred Elliott was a prolific watercolour painter and lithographer based in Queensland and New South Wales from 1890s to 1920s, during which time he travelled up and down the coast by ship – sketching liners, cargo, sailing ships and navy vessels traversing the shoreline. This illustrated folio is a fine example of Fred Elliott’s breadth of knowledge of the local topography and maritime history. On the Australian Station, circa 1893 includes scenes depicting Royal Navy vessels on the open sea and coming in to harbour including; H.M.S Calliope after the Hurricane, H.M.S Boomerang in a Heavy Swell, H.M.S Nelson Firing a Salute, H.M.S Orlando Passing the South Solitary. The coastal scenes periodically placed throughout the journal are of noteworthy landmarks or islands often including details of encampments or passing vessels – such as; Redcliffe, Crowds Heads, Peel Island - the Quarantine Station Queensland and H.M.S Nelson entering Sydney Heads. This collection is a rare ensemble of Australian marine history from the early 1890s, containing a rich array of scenic views embodied by Fred Elliott’s high-keyed and atmospheric watercolours.
