  • Notes:
Amilcar was founded in July 1921 by Joseph Lamy and Emile Akar - a cryptic anagram of the partners’ names. The business was established in Paris but quickly outgrew these inner-city premises and during 1924 the company relocated to Saint Denis on the northern side of the city. The original Amilcar was a small cyclecar simply designated by providing seating for no more than two people and powered by an engine of up to 1100cc. Once a vehicle exceeded these limits it was officially designated a voiturette. The 4-cylinder 903cc Amilcar CC appeared in 1922 and subsequently became available in two further versions. The CS was released in 1924 being a brisker sports model increased to 1004 cc. Amilcar is perhaps best known for the CGS Grand Sport of 1924 which was powered by a 1074 cc side-valve engine and four-wheel brakes and this evolved into the CGSS Grand Sport Surbaissé. Amilcar entered automobile racing in the mid-1920s with a group of supercharged double overhead cam 1100 cc six-cylinder cars. In their full works racing configuration, these cars became famous in the hands of racing driver Andre Morel. At the end of 1933, a company owned by Briès and Sée, called “Sofia” (Societe financiere pour l’automobile), took effective control of Amilcar, which nevertheless continued to function under its existing name. Production of the Amilcar was not resumed after the second world war. The car offered here is an example of the Amilcar Model G, produced from 1925 to 1927, which was the French company’s most popular touring model. The Model G is powered by the 1100cc engine with a Solex carburettor, similar to that of the sporting CGS but less highly tuned and the wheelbase being some 8” shorter than the sports cars at 8’ 6”. Probably originally fitted with two-seater drophead coupé coachwork, according to the vendor, chassis number 70532 (stamped on the front axle) was found as a chassis only and a replacement fabric covered sports body was constructed in Geelong Victoria, in the early 1970s. Therefore, this car is believed to have an early history in Melbourne but the vendor has been unable to collaborate further provenance on the car as information was lost when the previous owner passed away in 1989. This delightful little Amilcar incorporates sensible modifications to enhance its usability, affording the prospect of reliable and exciting motoring as well as potential in Vintage club and regularity events.
