Lot Description:Richard Shields personal display collection of cabochons
the 67 various shaped cabochons including nephrite, opal, agate, tiger’s eye, chrysoprase, etc., all displayed in a craftsman made various N.Z. woods box with alternating timber panelled hinged lid.
The box measuring 715 x 190 x 43. -
Notes:This comes from Richard Arthur Shields' (1923-2014) personal collection and is being sold on behalf of his family. Richard was born on the family farm at Mangawhai, his parents worked the kauri gum fields and moved to Auckland in 1929. Richard studied at the Elam School of Art in Auckland. In the 1960s Richard was an instructor in lapidary work with the Auckland Geological & Lapidary Society. He won many ‘first’ prizes with his high quality cabochon collections. Richard also did jade carvings with nephrite jade. He sold his jade carvings through the Auckland Museum. Peter Minturn was a close friend of Richard’s for 50 years. Peter commissioned Richard to carve many prestigious commissions including silver and jade brooches for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Anne, a jade pendant for the son of the Sultan of Brunei, etc. Further details available. Extra note:This display was exhibited by Richard at the ‘Auckland Geological & Lapidary Society’ in 1965 and 1966, where it won 1st prize, a copy of certificates available. This collection was also used by Richard to show perspective clients examples for future commissions.
