Lot Description:A fine quality large rectangular tray with armorial, French, 19th century
'Arm on a play c 1860' The arms appear to be those of the Counts of Verinville (see siestap volume IV,plate CLXXXXI, No. 23).The Vontiers family were created counts of Verinville in the 1740s.There is no record in my files of a Marquessate but it could be, during the upheavals in France during the 19th century that it was one of the non-hereditary titles which was of short duration and died with the title-holder. (see Marquis deRuvigny's 'Nobilities of Europe' 1910) There is no record of such a title in Ruvigny's 1914 edition. After the Franco-Prussian conflict of 1870 the last Emperor fled to England (where he subsequently died) and France finally became a republic and no more nobles were created. Today the French government does not recognise any titles although such are kept alive within the families concerned.
