Lot Description:CONDITIONAL PARDON: JAMES SMITH, TRANSPORTED FOR LIFE ABOARD "INDEFATIGABLE" IN 1815
signed by the Governor, Richard Bourke and Alexander Macleay, the Colonial Secretary in August 1835. With original wax seal of New South Wales still attached. -
Notes:James Smith, having been found guilty at Middlesex Assizes on April 20 1814 and transported "for the term of his natural life" to New South Wales aboard the convict ship "Indefatigable", arriving in 1815, has his remaining sentence remitted in February 1834 "taking into Consideration [his] good conduct". Smith had been one of 95 "lifers" on the ship that had brought him to the Colony.
