The township of Jerilderie was held up by the Kelly gang for 3 days in 1879 where they not only stole £2000 from the bank but also burned the mortgages held within. They had already locked the police in their own cells and held the remaining residents hostage at the pub where they were treated to free drinks. The Kellys had a price on their heads equivalent to $250,000 at the time, however no attempt was made by any residents to hinder the gang in any way. It was here that Ned Kelly penned his famous JERILDERIE LETTER
