Lot Description:A scrimshaw powder horn engraved with a tallship and kangaroo
after George Stubbs’ “The Kongouro of New Holland”.
34cm long -
Notes:Stubbs was an English painter best known for his painting of horses. His painting of "The Kanouro from New Holland" was the first painting a a kangaroo by a European (note his original drawing was not done from a live subject). The painting was commissioned by naturalist Sir Joseph Banks, who had accompanied Captain James Cook to Australia aboard The Endeavour, 18th Century. ♦ This lot has been identified at the time of cataloguing as containing organic material which may be subject to export or import restrictions.
