Notes:In the last months of 1838, the French naval artist Romuald Georges Ménard visited Sydney on board the Vénus under the command of Captain Abel Aubert Du Petit-Thouars. The expedition, on the direction of Louis Philippe, claimed Tahiti for France and visited the English settlement at Sydney, where Ménard was able to make studies for his watercolours of the harbour, its environs, and the Parramatta River. Eventually two lithographs based on Ménard’s drawings appeared in the Atlas Pittoresque, published in Paris in 1841, being one of four atlas volumes accompanying ten others of text for Dupetit-Thours’ official account of the expedition, Voyage autour du monde sur la Fregate la Vénus. One plate carries the title ‘Vue de la rade de Sydney et du For Macquarie. The second, our watercolour, Vue de la ville de Sydney et environs, was presented as a double plate with the slightly different title, ‘Vue de Sydney et del’éntree de la rivière de Parramatta’. Topographical in its requirements and skillful execution, the broad sweep of land is embellished with numerous buildings and other signs of civilization, of Sydney Cove and the harbour decked with shipping at anchor or scudding before a lively breeze. The whole has a freshness of vision that comes from seeing a place for the first time, a moment in history frozen for future fascination. David Thomas
