Lot Description:Murray, Robert Lathrop. Murray’s Austral-Asiatic Review. Volume 1 numbers 1 – 2
Octavo, foxed, in later wrappers. Hobart Town, Robert Lathrop Murray, 1828. -
Notes:Rare: the first two numbers of a total of five published. The first number here is inscribed at the head of the title-page from the editor, Murray, to William Wardell, editor of the Sydney newspaper, The Australian. William Wardell’s trial for libel of Governor Darling is extensively covered in the second number. Both Murray and Wardell were active campaigners for a free press at a time when Darling was legislating and bringing the full force of his essentially untrammelled power to bear on those who were defying his administration. Owing to the oversight of successive British administrations, Darling as Governor-General, despite his being merely the representative of the Crown, had powers in New South Wales and Van Diemens Land that vastly exceeded those of the Crown in Great Britain. Ferguson, 1210 (part).
