  • Lot Description:
Jones, Henry Gilbert. Rare Set of 12 Plates of Early Melbourne 1841 to 1845 [cover title]
Twelve etched plates, together with the accompanying oblong quarto pamphlet, loose in the titling-folder, beautifully presented in a collector’s morocco folding bookform box, lettered in gilt. Melbourne, The Fine Art Society, 1934.
  • Notes:
Scarce: presentation copy inscribed to John S. Gill from the publisher, signed by William Gill. A set of fine early etchings, newly printed from the recently discovered copper plates in 1934. The plates had not been published previously but were used by Jones for his personal letterhead, with these twelve having formed part of a larger series etched by Jones and printed for him as letterhead by John Green of Little Collins Street, Melbourne, in 1846. The original printings are, however, excessively rare and it is possible that some of the images here were never printed off before the present publication in 1934. Kerr, pp. 411-2.
