Lot Description:Jarbo, Rev. P.J. (family of). Manuscript Commonplace Book from the family of Rev. P.J. Jarbo
Small quarto notebook, bound in stationer’s half calf and marbled boards, somewhat worn and contents detached. Various places, Tasmania, Calcutta, North Shields, circa 1840 to 1865. -
Notes:An uncommon survival, this family commonplace book evidently travelled with Rev. Jarbo and his family from each of his parishes to the next. Van Diemen’s Land was part of the diocese of Calcutta, a geographical oddity that saw considerable cross-fertilisation between India and Van Diemen’s Land. After service in Van Diemen’s Land and India, Jarbo was in charge of a parish in North Shields and was serving there when he died in 1865. The commonplace book is in several hands throughout and, while some pieces are signed by Jarbo, others are unsigned and in different hands. Some are dated, some are not. The commonplace book also includes press cuttings and other pasted in pieces, including a few flyers of a pious nature by Jarbo. What makes this piece of interest are two articles, “Tradition of the Swan River Natives” and “Australia 60 Years Ago”, the first written evidently in the early 1840s (perhaps earlier), the second dated 1848. There are other slight pieces of Australian interest, much of Indian interest, and a loosely inserted letter (dated 1865).
