Lot Description:Hodgson, Christopher Pemberton. Reminiscences of Australia. With Hints on the Squatter’s Life.
Duodecimo, with a frontispiece and folding map, original embossed cloth. London, Simpkin and Marshall, 1846. -
Notes:A scarce and important account relating to Leichhardt’s first expedition and the search party sent out for him, and a good account of the rather hard life of a squatter on the north-east frontier in the 1840s. “Hodgson was a member of Leichhardt’s expedition to Port Essington in 1844. When Leichhardt realised that the stores were running short a month after the party had set out, it was Hodgson and the American negro known only as Caleb who agreed to return. As the months passed and Leichhardt did not appear rumours spread that the party had been killed by Aboriginals. Hodgson led a small party in search of Leichhardt in July 1845. Hodgson published this account of his travels shortly afterwards in England, at the last minute recording Leichhardt’s safe arrival at Port Essington. Ferguson, 4310; Wantrup, 140.
