Cruickshank, Percy. Hints to Emigrants or, Incidents in the Emigration of John Smith of Smith-Town
Designed & etched by Percy Cruickshank [wrapper title]. Oblong duodecimo, nine etched plates with text below; sewn in the original green titling-wrappers, with a few repairs. London, J. Harwood, n.d. but circa 1849.
  • Notes:
Very rare: a humorous account of the vicissitudes of emigration to the Greater British Empire. The piece is rare and noted by Ferguson only in the 1986 Addenda from the copy of another edition or issue in the State Library of Victoria. That other edition or issue was published by W. Hurst & Co., London, and was “To be had at all the Railway Stations”. Both the Hurst edition described by Ferguson and the present Harwood edition were to be had “1/- plain & 2/- coloured”. Exhibited: Exiles and Emigrants (National Gallery of Victoria and National Museum of Australia, 2005-6). Not in Ferguson but see 5026a for another edition.
