  • Notes:
Very rare: a presentation copy, inscribed by the author on a preliminary blank to English publisher Emerson Charnley. Remarkably, this is, at this late date, the first voyage narrative published in the colonies. This important coastal voyage account, with its exceptional series of lithographic illustrations by the prominent colonial artist, William Fernyhough, describes the wreck of the barque Charles Eaton, lost in Torres Strait en route from Sydney to Canton, and the subsequent massacre of the passengers by the local Aborigines. In 1836 the colonial schooner Isabella, which had been sent by Governor Bourke to help any survivors of the shipwreck, was able to rescue two young boys, who had survived the massacre, from Murray Island. Brockett was on board the schooner Isabella, and it was from his drawings, taken on the spot, that the renowned William Fernyhough prepared the fine series of illustrations for his book, several of Aboriginal interest. Fernyhough was employed by the Sydney lithographic printer J.G. Austin, who had been commissioned to produce the plates for the book. Ferguson, 2095.
