Lot Description:Smith, James Edward. A Specimen of the Botany of New Holland... The figures by James Sowerby
Vol. I [all published]. Quarto, with 16 finely handcoloured engraved plates, with the half-title, bound in full calf, spine label, Cowlishaw copy with bookplate. London, Printed by J. Davis, Published by J. Sowerby, 1793. -
Notes:Rare: the first separately-published book devoted to Australian botany. James Edward Smith, President of the Linnean Society, was arguably the foremost contemporary British botanical authority, and James Sowerby one of the leading botanical artists. This important work includes a number of Australian species described and beautifully illustrated in fine handcolouring for the first time – most notably the waratah. Smith dedicated this work to Thomas Wilson, a Fellow of the Linnean Society, “at whose persuasion this work was undertaken, and on whose friendly communications it is founded”. It was Wilson who had arranged for the publication of Surgeon John White’s First Fleet journal and Smith notes in the preface to the present book that the original drawings were done in the colony by Surgeon John White – although it is more probable that the drawings provided by him were prepared by convict artists. Davidson, pp. 86-7; Ferguson, 170; Great Flower Books (1990), p. 140; Henrey, 1356; Nissen BBI, 1861.
