Lot Description:Mann, David Dickinson. The Present Picture of New South Wales
illustrated with Four Large Coloured Views, from drawings taken on the spot, of Sydney, the Seat of Government: with A Plan of the Colony, Taken from actual survey by public authority... Quarto, with a folding handcoloured map of the Settlement in New South Wales, and with four large aquatint views of Sydney Cove (joining to form a panorama), bound in polished calf of the period, decorated in blind, Tristan Beusst copy with bookplate. London, John Booth, 1811. -
Notes:First edition. Mann’s book has a special place in the early literature of Australia. It is the last work written in the tradition of the First Fleet journalists, although it differs markedly from them. Unlike his predecessors, Mann does not give us a chronological journal but rather a sweeping picture of the development of the colony under Governors Hunter, King and Bligh. As well, Mann was a convict and his book is the first substantial historical work published by a convict. On rare occasions Mann’s account is accompanied by two large aquatint views on four sheets, after the convict artist John Eyre, which together form a panoramic view of Sydney. “Mann’s book sought to encourage migration to New South Wales and the four aquatint views seek to show Sydney as a place where opportunity beckoned. The mansions and warehouses of ex-convicts line the shores of the Cove…” (McCormick). These four sheets are bound with this copy. “Mann’s book in its complete form, with the four sheets of the Eyre panorama, is of the greatest rarity” (Wantrup). Clancy, 9.13; Ferguson, 518; McCormick, plates 94-6; Wantrup, 37.
