Lot Description:Hunter, Governor John. An Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island…
Quarto, with engraved title-page (the date slightly cropped ), frontispiece and 15 other engraved plates and folding charts (chart of Botany Bay, Port Jackson and Broken Bay with a short tear), bound in more recent half morocco. London, John Stockdale, 1793. -
Notes:Another copy: with splendid colonial provenance. This copy with the retained coloured calligraphic bookplate of “Miss M.C. Hassall, Parramatta, July, 1818”. This is one of very, very few examples of a First Fleet journal with demonstrable provenance to an Australian-born colonist, especially one who was alive during Hunter’s governorship, and doubly remarkable as the copy of a woman bibliophile. Mary Cover Hassall was the daughter of Rowland and Elizabeth Hassall, who had sailed to Tahiti in the Duff in 1796 but had to flee to Sydney two years later. Mary was born at Parramatta in 1799. In 1819 she married missionary William Lawry, the year after she marked her ownership of this book. Mary died in childbirth six years later. Davidson, pp. 87-9; Ferguson, 152; Hill 2, 857; Wantrup, 13.
