  • Lot Description:
Heylyn, Peter. “An Appendix to the Former Work Endeavouring A Discovery of the Vnknown Parts of the World
especially of Terra Australis Incognita, or the Southern Continent…” [drop title]. Folio, bound in old calf (supplied and rebacked). London, [Philip Chetwinde], 1662. Extracted from his Cosmographie, in Four Books by seventeenth-century theologian and historian Peter Heylyn, the “Appendix” deals, at times facetiously, with real and imaginary voyages to the theoretical Terra Australis. On the dominant counterpoise theory, this continent was held to be as large as Europe, Asia, and Africa, and Heylyn had “oft marvelled with my self that no further hath been made in Discovery of it.” He discusses the real voyages of Magellan, Le Maire and Schouten, and Quiros, among others, as well as imaginary utopias and dystopias set in the Great South Land, including Hall, More, and Bacon. See: Davidson, p. 41; Mackaness, 2; Moors, 11 (1656 edition); Renard Ignis, 4 (1677 edition); Sabin, 31655; Wing, H1691.
