Notes:The BMW 2002 series is widely considered the definitive small sports sedan and the model that saved BMW from ruin. The BMW Neue Klasse or The New Class line of compact sedans and coupes from the 1967 1500 up to the 2002s in 1975, these models cleverly combined the ultimate features in a modern, sporting automobile: a functional, distinguished design impervious to short-term styling trends combined with lively touring performance and easily managed town behaviour. From the outset the two-door coupes in this New Class range were evolving in to two-door sports sedans. The sporty capabilities caught the attention of auto enthusiasts and established BMW as an edgy international brand. Precursors to the famed BMW 3 Series, the success of the two-door cemented the firm's future as an upper tier performance car maker. In the process BMW commissioned an exhaustive series of crash tests during the development of the body shells, producing a car to the highest safety standards of the era. The 2002 uses a carefully matched combination of front spring struts and rear semi trailing arms, rigorously tested in tough touring car competitions. In 1968, the cabriolet, based on the 02 body, was built by Karosserie Baur-coachbuilder for BMW since the 1930s and for manufacturers such as Porsche, Audi and Ford. There were 2400 Baur Cabriolets built from 1967-1975. This rare, 4-speed manual Baur Cabriolet 2002 with its distinctive and stylish classic round tail-lights was manufactured on April 16th 1973 and delivered on May 15th 1973 to the importer, BMW London Ltd. The original paint colour being Baikal metallic (paint code 042) as confirmed by the BMW Group Historical Information Archive, Munich. The original service book notes the pre-delivery check carried out on 12th June 1973, by BMW Concessionaires, Dover, Kent. The BMW archive information for this Model 71, ends on despatch and the history of the car is picked up in Australia, in 1974 as per the vendor's statement: 'My recollection is that the 1973 BMW Baur Cabriolet was purchased by a close friend, Geoffrey Griffith at the 1974 Sydney Motor Show. Patrick O'Halloran purchased the car in 1975/1976. Patrick sold the car to Gary Scodeller, in 1981. Gary sold the car to the current owner, in 2011'. This car bares the Australian compliance sticker dated 1st October, 1973. Noteworthy is that the first recorded service in the original service book took place at Capital Motors Ltd. in Sydney at 20,000miles on 12th October, 1976. This distinguished car carries its original Baikal metallic paintwork and is understood to have undergone a re-trim to the black vinyl and herringbone cloth interior in c1980. It has an odometer reading of 82,579 miles and boasts its original matching number engine. The original owners' handbook and service book accompany the car. During the month of April 2016 $5.243 has been spent on the brake systems as well as wheel bearings and associated works. Seldom seen in Australia this car provides a wonderful opportunity to purchase a legendary part of BMW history in this their centennial year.
