    From 1968 to 1988, Rubin was a curator and director of the painting and sculpture department at the Museum of Modern Art, located in New York City, New York. He played a key role in building the museum's collection of abstract-expressionism works and organized many exhibitions, including Dada, Surrealism, & Their Heritage (1968) and the ground breaking exhibition Primitivism in 20th Century Art: exhibiting Oceanic and African Art alongside 20 Century paintings
