He played a key role in building the museum's collection of abstract-expressionism works and organized many exhibitions, including Dada, Surrealism, & Their Heritage (1968) and the ground breaking exhibition Primitivism in 20th Century Art: exhibiting Oceanic and African Art alongside 20 Century paintings
