Notes:Robert Jacks' first solo exhibition in Melbourne in 1966 established him as one of the exciting new artists of his generation with a painting acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria. Subsequently Jacks was included in The Field exhibition that heralded the arrival of Colourfield abstraction in Australia, and by 1969 he had established himself in New York where for the next decade he produced mainly Conceptual art. When Jacks returned to Melbourne in 1978 to take up the position of Artist-in-Residence at the University of Melbourne, he devoted himself once again to abstract painting. His new paintings consisted of a mosaic of crisp, crystalline triangles and squares in a minimalist arrangement of black, whites and greys that echoed his New York experience; however, these predominately monochromatic paintings soon gave way to a new series that celebrated colour. By the mid 1980s Robert Jacks' conscientious adoption of a high-keyed colour palette fully expressed the joie de vivre that he felt with his return to painting; and, in homage to his early artistic heroes - Picasso and Braque, he incorporated a stylised form of one of their favourite motifs - the mandolin into his compositions with its sensuous rounded forms, providing a perfect foil for his angular shapes. Robert Jacks continued to use this motif through an extended series of paintings and works on paper predominately using a palette of bright shades of yellow and red, and in order to acknowledge the inspiration for these works, Jacks gave them titles with Spanish references, such as Summer Flamenco 2000 (Lot 34) and Granadina 2000 (Lot 33), both of which refer to the exuberant music and dance of the region.
