  • Notes:
    William Dexter arrived in Australia on board the ship ëBank of Englandí. He taught at Lyndhurst College, Glebe then went to the Bendigo Goldfields where he designed the diggers flag. In 1854 Dexter and his wife Caroline launched a Gallery of the Arts and School of Design. Sadly, this failed and the pair separated in 1857. Dexter returned to Sydney where he died in 1860. His work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of South Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Queensland Art Gallery, National Library of Australia, Bendigo Art Gallery and the Joseph Brown collection.
