Lot Description:An embellished hardwood portable chest, Guanpixiang, 19th/20th century
the wood probably huanghuali, of square form, the flat topped hinged cover with metal 'ruyi'-head clasp and corner mounts, lifting to reveal a shallow compartment over a pair of panelled doors flush within mitred frames opening to two pairs of short drawers above a long drawer, each with vase-shaped metal pulls, the sides set with bail handles and one side with two small additional circular plates with a chain joining the cover and side, the cover inlaid with a bird on a fruiting and flowering pomegranate bough and with 'lingzhi' fungus, in various coloured hardstones, including lapis-lazuli, malachite, mother-of-pearl and soapstone, the front with bats among clouds and the base with a branch bearing the 'Three Abundances', the doors with boys at play, the cover with two inscribed ivory plaques, one with an apocryphal four-character mark of Jiaqing
