Notes:In Criss Canning’s principal monograph, David Thomas noted how the artists 'is not a fast painter, her paintings taking an enormous amount of time and energy ... It took nearly two years to complete the twenty-eight paintings for the 1989 exhibition at the Melbourne Art Exchange [where the present work was first shown].’ In the lead-up to the solo exhibition, Canning discussed her modus operandi: ‘Painting for me is very much a ‘feeling’ thing […] I begin by sketching the design in paint, with a little medium added. Working directly from the objects arranged before me, I paint each of the things featured in their order of importance, completing each before going onto the next. It is necessary to be conscious to the balance and harmonies I want to achieve in the overall finished work.'
