  Undated, unsigned, untitled and not previously exhibited, this painting of the coastline north of Kaikoura, a seaside town on the east coast of the South island about 180 kms north of Christchurch, cannot be dated with certainty, but on stylistic grounds can probably assigned to the late 1960s.26 It is the only landscape Bensemann painted of this particular stretch of country. From an elevated viewpoint he shows the view across the sweeping curves of the bay to the snow-covered Seaward Kaikoura mountains whose lower slopes are hidden by clustering rain clouds, a landscape feature Bensemann took particular delight in depicting.
