Lot Description:Parkinson, Sydney - A journal of a voyage to the South Seas, in His Majesty's Ship, the Endeavour.
Faithfully transcribed from the papers of the late Sydney Parkinson, draughtsman to Joseph Banks, Esq[,] on his late expedition, with Dr Solander, round the world. Embellished with views and designs, delineated by the author, and engraved by capital artists. 1st ed. London : Printed for Stanfield Parkinson, the editor, 1773. Folio. Page size: 339 x 276mm. xxiii, 212p. Frontispiece, 26 plates, map, errata. 4466. Beddie 712. Rebound. Half leather/brown cloth covered boards. Label to spine. Marbled endpapers. Slight trimming to contents. Mild wear to binding. Some wear, soiling and foxing to contents. Bookplate of Earl of Donegal on front pastedown. Tape repair to corner of page 13/14. Parkinson was the natural history draughtsman on the Endeavour. He died at Batavia of dysentery on 26 January 1771 on the homeward voyage. His brother Stanfield, to anticipate Hawkesworth's account, hurriedly published this journal. After a few copies had appeared, the further issue was stopped by an injunction in Chancery, on the ground of infringement of Hawkesworth's rights and of material belonging to Banks. Dr Fothergill, a friend of the Parkinsons, afterwards bought the remainder, which appeared in 1784 as the reissue, with appendix added. A handsome copy of this very important and scarce work.
