Lot Description:Colenso, William - File copy of a letter to Edward Tregear concerning his dictionary.
4p. Bifolium. Lined paper. Provenance: originally from the collection of Henry Hill. A wonderful handwritten letter bearing Colenso's hallmarks: idiosyncratic abbreviations, carefully numbered sections, an accusatory tone. Colenso writes that he was 'greatly surprised' to learn of the publication of Tregear's dictionary since Tregear had 'never once alluded' to it. No doubt, Colenso felt sore at being beaten to the punch; his own dictionary was never finished. G. -
