    Oval collecting tin reputedly once owned by William Colenso.
    19th century. 50 x 83 x 155mm. Hinged lid. Inside lined with cork or similar. 'Top' and 'Terry' handwritten on upper side of lid. Contains three pins, one skewering a small, faintly iridescent butterfly or moth. Provenance: originally from the collection of Henry Hill. Perhaps better known for his work in the field of botany, Colenso was also interested in other branches of natural history. Several articles by him concerning Lepidoptera were published in the 'Transactions and proceedings of the New Zealand Institute', including 'Notes on a peculiar chrysalis of an unknown species of butterfly' (1888).
