Lot Description:Brown, William - New Zealand and its aborigines : being an account of the aborigines, trade, and resources of the colony
And the advantages it now presents as a field for emigration and the investment of capital. 1st ed. London : Smith, Elder, and Co, 1845. 8vo. viii, 320, 24p. Publishers' catalogue. 708. Decorated green cloth. Hinges reinforced. Some wear and soiling. The book outlines at length Maori customs and social attitudes with their bearing on the actions of Europeans and Government. Brown's viewpoint is that of Brodie, Terry, Campbell and the free-enterprise Aucklanders but is better argued with pungent and telling criticism of Waitangi, the Hobson-Shortland administration and the Wakefield's theoretical and tactical errors around Cook Strait. Scarce. G. -
