Lot Description:Polack, J S - New Zealand : being a narrative of travels and adventures during a residence in that country between the years 1831 and 1837.
In two volumes. 1st ed. London : Richard Bentley, 1838. 8vo. Volume I: xii, 403p. Frontispiece, folding map, two plates, illustration. Volume II: vi, 441p. Frontispiece, two plates, errata. 4589. Half blue leather/marbled boards. Understated gold tooling to spine. Foxing to endpapers. Some foxing to plates. Polack, member of a Jewish family with Australian connections, was in New Zealand between 1831 and 1837, firstly for 12 months in Hokianga and then as a Bay of Islands trader for four years before returning to England, and coming back to New Zealand before his departure for California in 1849 where he died. Although his knowledge and experience was not as great as claimed, he is a more useful early informant than the denigration by Colenso and others would imply. A truly exquisite set of this scarce work. Easily this cataloguer/auctioneer's favourite. G+ to VG. -
