    [Cooper, George Sisson] - Journal of an expedition overland from Auckland to Taranaki, by way of Rotorua, Taupo, and the West Coast.
    Undertaken in the summer of 1849-50, by His Excellency the Governor-in-Chief of New Zealand. Inscribed and signed by subject, Sir George Grey. 1st ed. Auckland : Printed by Williamson and Wilson, 1851. 12mo. 310p. 1409. BIM 408. Rebound. Full black leather. New endpapers. Some trimming to contents. Mild soiling and foxing/browning to contents. Inscription in pencil on label on front pastedown: 'T George / from his Uncle / G Grey'. Inscription in ink on blank: 'Ki a / Ta Kerei / na tina hoa aroha / G Grey.' Previous owner's signature or similar removed from same blank. Grey's signature on title page. Translated into Maori by C O B Davis. First published in 15 parts in the 'Maori messenger' 15 August 1850 to 14 August 1851. This issue in same type, and probably from the original galleys, with minor changes. Account of Grey's journey to Taupo in attempt to ascend Ngauruhoe, for which permission was disputed. Let down somewhat by the modern binding, but nevertheless an appealing association copy of this important and extremely scarce work. Binding VG. Contents G to G+.
