Lot Description:Buller, James - Forty years in New Zealand
Including a personal narrative, an account of Maoridom, and of the Christianization and colonization of the country. 1st ed. London : Hodder and Stoughton, 1878. 8vo. viii, 503p. Frontispiece, folding map, sixteen plates. 748. Decorated red cloth. New front endpapers. Considerable wear and soiling. Most of the text is an outline of Maori origins, legends and custom, the work of the missions of all denominations, European colonisation and its consequences, to the Maori land wars. However Buller's most valuable contribution is within the first 152 pages where he recalls his initial posting as a Wesleyan missionary to Mangungu (Hokianga) from 1836 until his founding of the Tangiteroria (Kaipara) mission in 1838. A tired but complete copy. AF. FA. -
