  • Notes:
The sitter was the fourth daughter of George II and Queen Caroline. Born in 1723 at Leicester House, she was married by proxy at the Chapel Royal, St. James' Chapel and in person in Cassel in 1740 to Frederick II, Landsgrave of Hesse Cassel, K.G. (1720-1785). She had four sons, the eldest surviving son becoming the Elector Wilhelm IX, She died at Hannan in 1772. Amigoni painted at least four of the daughters of George II during his English sojourn 1729-39. Vertue records that he was patronised by Queen Caroline and painted a series of such portraits in 1732. Drawing for these portraits are recorded and identified by Elaine Claydon in her article A Group of Portrait Drawings by Jacopo Amigoni in Master Drawings, XII, 1974, pp. 41-46. An engraving by J.Simon after Amigoni of Princess Mary is also recorded.
