Lot Description:Henry D. Driver
A colonial N.Z. maritime painting depicting a barque in heavy seas surrounded by three waterspouts
oil
645 x 1030 -
Notes:The artist is listed in Thames Directories 1893 - 1899 as painter and paperhanger. This is one of only three recorded works, one of a giant kauri in the Coromandel is held in the Thames Library. [Notes from the vendor: ‘This painting came from my maternal grandfather’s house in Mt Eden. They moved there from Thames where my mother was born in 1909. When they came to New Zealand they came by sailing boat & one of the passengers was a Henry Driver. On the way to N.Z. & from what my grandfather said there was a storm with 5 waterspouts & they sailed through these. I believe they were close to N.Z. at the time. When they settled in Thames the passenger Henry Driver painted the painting & gave it to my grandfather & grandmother (Alan & Katie Winsor)’.
