Notes:Label verso states attribution, & identifies work as a study for plate VIII in 'The Costumes of the Russian Empire,' pub. W Miller 1803. Separate label states an etching appeared with the title 'Femme de la Province d'Ingrie, du cote de la Finlande,' in 'Dessines en Russie d 'apres Nature et Graves a l 'Eau forte por J B Le Prince,' c.1772, with the figure depicted in reverse from this study. Le Prince was a student of Francois Boucher (1703-1770), & in 1758 he travelled to Russia to work for Catherine the Great at the Imperial Palace, St Petersburg. He remained in Russia for 5 years, & travelled through Finland, Lithuania & Siberia, returning to Paris in Dec, 1763.
