  A Japanese Carved & Pierced Light Wood Panel
  Framed in Black Lacquer, Taisho Period 20th century. A 'ranma' was an integral part of the architecture of old wood frame houses. The ranma was suspended above the fusuma [sliding doors] to fill a gap between the tops of the doors and the ceiling. They helped to circulate the air and light in the house as well as adding a decorative element.
