    Finely Carved & Detailed Chinese Figure of a Deity
    riding on a snarling lion dog. Republic Period. An elaborately crowned Guanyin, regarded by the Chinese as the Goddess of mercy, she is frequently depicted as riding a mythological animal known as the Hou, which somewhat resembles a Buddhist lion, and symbolises the divine supremacy exercised by Guanyin over the forces of nature. One leg is crossed with her bare feet peeping from below the robes.
