Lot Description:An early 1900s N.Z. folk art carved cupboard
the small kauri cupboard with the door heavily carved in an Australian theme featuring a kangaroo, kookaburra, an aboriginal figure, lizard, emu etc. and a shield quoting "The Black Forest Australia". Three shelves to the interior. 610 x 280 x 1090. -
Provenance:William was a friend of the vendor's family in the early 1900s when they all lived in Miramar, Wellington.

Notes:This piece was carved by William Ah Gee, one of Wellington's earliest Chinese settlers from the Canton Province. In 1871 he married a N.Z. woman. He was well known in Wellington and admired for his carving and listed his occupation as 'carver and gilder'.
