Lot Description:Late Victorian Sterling Silver Snuff Box
hallmarked Birmingham, 1896, Deakin & Francis, shaped rectangular form, base and lid profusely engraved with foliage, inscription to the lid, "James Angus/Rooty Hill/N.S. Wales", total weight 40gm, 6cm x 4cm x 1.5cm -

Notes:James Angus (1836-1919) played a major part in establishing colonial railway lines in Australia and New Zealand. He also purchased the Minchinbury Estate in Rooty Hill, which produced sparkling wines including Minchinbury Champagne which won gold medals in Australia and London in 1909-12. It was later sold to Penfolds & Co for a record price at the time. His later achievements also included being the vice president for Royal Agricultural Society, founding Blacktown Shire Council, vice president for Burnside Orphan Homes and advocate for Warragamba Dam. He was tragically killed in a train accident.
