Lot Description:Book On Dresses & Decorations
SHAW, Henry. Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages. London, William Pickering, 1843. [Printed by C. Whittingham, Chiswick]. Two Volumes. First edition. 94 colour plates including pictorial extra titlepage to vol.1, interleaved with protective blanks, numerous colour-printed initials and wood-engraved vignettes, pages unnumbered, preliminary and final leaves of both volumes with some light foxing, the plates clean, top edges gilt, large 8vo. Near-contemporary tan half morocco, marbled boards and endpapers, spines elaborately gilt with raised bands and contrasting title labels. A pleasant traditional-style bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume. Some of the protective blanks have pale foxing or offsetting. A very good copy.The colour plates are hand-coloured etchings, or printed from woodblocks in several colours, often with additional colour by hand. The text pages have illuminated initials and marginal illustrations printed from woodblocks in up to four colours. Issue -
