Lot Description:Book On Floral Design
HULME, F.Edward. Suggestions in Floral Design. London, Cassell, Petter & Galpin, n.d. [1878-9]. 52 fine chromolitho plates with tissue guard sheets, printed in colours and gold, 52pp., folio, publisher's olive cloth with decorative design in black and gold. A couple of small spots of discolouration on spine and a small repair to lower corner of front board. Some very minor rubbing on edges and corners. Internally a very good unmarked and unfoxed copy. The vivid plates are printed by Dupuy in Paris. The work is intended as a guide for designers of ornament. The designs have some affinity with the work of Christopher Dresser (Hulme was initially a pupil of Dresser) but are less abstract than Dresser at his most inventive. One of the most underrated of the grand 19th cent. English chromolitho pattern books. -
