[Binding] HUMPHREYS, Henry Noel. The Origin and Progress of the Art of Writing. London, David Bogue, 1854.28 full-page plates with protective leaves, of which13 are chromolitho, some with silver and gold, illustrations in text, viii,176pp., neat signature at top of titlepage, intermittent light spotting or foxing, large 8vo., 255 x 165mm, moulded and pierced papier-mache boards backed with red paper, spine rebacked with original undamaged gilt-lettered spine laid over. A couple of small chips to the boards and some cracking as usual but a much better than usual copy of this impressive but fragile binding. This is the second papier-mache edition. The first published 1852 by Ingram, Cooke & Co. Friedman 167. McLean VPBPaper p.58 illustrates the 1855 Day & Son edition as the second edition. -
