GELL, Sir William. Pompeiana : The Topography, Edifices and Ornaments of Pompeii, the result of excavations since 1819. London, Jennings and Chaplin, 1832. Frontis. portrait of Gell, an additional engraved title-page, 85 engraved plates (2 handcoloured), 30 vignette illustrations, many on india paper, (8),xxiv,198,(4),207,(1)pp., top edges gilt, others uncut, large 8vo, modern 1/2 calf and marbled boards to style. A later folding map (1845) of Pompeii on thin paper has been neatly tipped in to the contents section of Vol.1. Apart from a couple of pale spots on the frontis. and engraved title of Vol. 1, and some very light offsetting from a few plates, this is an unusually clean and crisp copy; EVANS, [Sir] Arthur.
