Lot Description:Book On Japanese Art
BING, S. Artistic Japan. Illustrations and Essays. (6 vols bound in 3)London, Sampson Low [&c], May 1888-May 1891. 6 volumes bound in 3, all published.Issued monthly 1888-91, a total of 36 issues, each issue has 8-10 full-page plates, most in colour, some folding, and numerous illustrations in the text, with the fine colour covers for each issue bound in at the end of each volume of 6 issues. Pages unnumbered. All volume titles present. Large 4to., contemporary 1/2 red morocco and red cloth boards, spine gilt with raised bands. A couple of carefully re-coloured light scuffs on a few of the corners. The marbled endpapers have some pale spotting otherwise the contents are clean and crisp. A fine set of a luxury periodical published simultaneously in Paris as 'Le Japon Artistique'. S.Bing (1838-1905) was an art critic, connoisseur, and dealer in Japanese objets d'art. His shop/gallery in Paris, 'l'Art Nouveau' became a focus for advanced taste in the 1890's. -
