[ Owen JONES ] LOCKHART, J.G. Ancient Spanish Ballads; Historical and Romantic. Translated, with Notes. A New Edition, Revised.London, John Murray, 1842.4 chromolitho and gold titlepages, chromolitho endpapers, tinted wood-engraved plates, numerous wood-engraved illustrations and vignettes, pages unnumbered, each page with text and illustrations surrounded with a decorative border printed in one or two colours. 4to., full plain vellum (rear board slightly marked), boards with plain gold fillet border and spine title gilt.The titlepages, endpapers, borders and some of the vignettes are by Owen Jones. The illustrations are by David Roberts, Henry Warren, William Hervey and others. First published in 1841, this is usually considered the first of the popular 'illuminated' gift books. This second edition has some slight differences in the illustrations and has added chromolitho endpapers. The vellum binding is probably later, but has preserved the endpapers. McLean VBD p.80.
