Lot Description:A Teak Desk Standish," HMAS Sydney Destroyed Emden 1914’
, crafted from the deck of the first HMAS Sydney, with two inkwells (each 7 x 9.5 x 3cm) topped with Bakelite lids. Etched into reverse ‘This Teak/ Is from Deck / of HMAS Sydney’, and on plaque to front ‘HMAS Sydney Destroyed Emden 1914’., 19.5 x 27 x 5cm deep, Special Note ; Australia’s first battleship was commissioned in 1913 and served in New Guinea in 1914, escorted the first Anzac convoy, engaging with the Australian submarines A1 and A2, destroyed the German raider Emden off the WA coast in 1914, and served in the North Sea 1916-18. Sydney engaged a Zeppelin and was the first Australian warship to launch an aircraft. It was scrapped in 1928 and mementoes like this, turned by RAN servicemen, were offered to the public that year -
