Lot Description:A Late 19th Century Architectural Black Slate Mantle Clock , dated 1905
fitted with a gilded chapter ring with Arabic numerals, and a two train movement , all encased in a black slate triple domed architectural case, with gilt Corinthian pilasters flanked by a colonnade , all on a breakfront plinth , fitted with a brass plaque inscribed " Presented to Mr Raymond Preston as an EXPRESSION OF ESTEEM, by the members and friends of the Paisley Wesleyan Mission , 24th June 1905" l 37.15cm d 14.65cm h 37cm Special Note: Rev Raymond Preston was a noted English Born Evangelist who spend many years in Australia and New Zealand who was then appointed to be Conference Evangelist of the Methodist Church, was also a close friend of Victor Trumper the famous cricketer , and because of this friendship Trumper dedicated his life to Christ. Married for the second time late in life to Marianne Smith (who was 81). She was an Irish immigrant with her husband to New Zealand, but a pioneering entrepreneur in her own right, starting her own business in 1880 which still operates today over 130 years later called Smith and Caughey. After Marianne died in 1938 he returned to Australia to live with his daughter Doris and her family, being my mother and aunt. Raymond died there in Concord in 1950. -
