Lot Description:Rare Sutton Panoramic Plate Of Australian Gold Mining Town Dunolly Circa Early 1860s
exposed curved-glass plate showing view from the outskirts of the town with various buildings visible including Colonial Bank, Caledonian Hotel, Simpsons Bendigo Hotel and Brittania Hotel. This image was taken using a Sutton Panoramic camera fitted with a Thomas Ross wide angle lens. The first Sutton cameras utilized Thomas Sutton's lens patented in 1859 but by mid-1861. Thomas Ross took over manufacture of the camera which were subsequently fitted with Ross's own, improved lens. -
Provenance:Discovered with a Sutton Panoramic camera that was salvaged from a photographic studio under demolition in Melbourne, date unknown.

Notes:The buildings visible in this image are consistent with those that were present on the main street of Dunolly, circa 1861.
